Im/migration myth busting week happened in the Springtime of this year, on March 18th-22nd at the University of Guelph campus. In light of the continued and growing closing off of opportunities for migrating people to live and stay in our communities with full-on paper rights, the campaign commenced with a speakers event about Canadaâs system of deportation of poor and working-class racialized im/migrants. Matthew Behrens spoke at the event, and Migrant Matters Radio recorded this representing of the knowledge and experience of allies. Behrens is a long-time community organizer and has worked closely with the targets of Canadian and U.S. ânational securityâ profiling for many years. He is co-coordinator of the Campaign to Stop Secret Trials in Canada, and founder of the Anne Frank Sanctuary Committee, which works to promote church sanctuary for refugees. The event was organized by the all-volunteer-run Guelph-based migrant worker advocacy collective Fuerza/Puwersa.
