Justice, Poverty and Oil: Unresolved Issues in East Timor

Date: Tuesday, April 8, 7pm

Location: Bluestockings Books, 172 Allen St., Manhattan (F Train to 2nd Avenue)

Speakers: John M. Miller (East Timor and Indonesia Action Network)
Charlie Scheiner (La™o Hamutuk “ Timor-Leste Institute for Development Monitoring and Analysis)

Description:

Recent events have created strange and troubling times for Timor-Leste (East Timor). On February 11, José Ramos-Horta, Timor-Leste™s newly elected president, was shot twice, and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão was also attacked, but escaped injury. In the same incident rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed. These events occurred in the context of weak governmental institutions, pervasive post-conflict and post-traumatic stress, internal displacement, rampant unemployment and widespread poverty.

Sources of income, employment and sustainability are urgent issues for Timor-Leste. For the next two generations Timor-Leste™s government will receive more than 95% of its revenues from oil and gas exports, which will then drop to zero. Developing the economy and alleviating poverty while avoiding the resource curse and other pitfalls of globalization are critical to the country™s future.

The ongoing struggle for justice is also an important issue. At the end of January, General Suharto-- the vicious Indonesian dictator responsible for killing more than 100,000 East Timorese people (as well as hundreds of thousands more Papuans, Acehnese and Indonesians) died, escaping justice. Many Timorese and Indonesians are still working to end impunity. For all the trauma Indonesia inflicted on Timor-Leste™s people, not one senior official has been brought to a trial for his crimes during Indonesia™s 24-year illegal occupation.

Justice, Poverty and Oil: Unresolved Issues in East Timor will serve to give updates and context to recent events and developments in Timor-Leste. John M. Miller, National Coordinator of the East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN), will discuss the relationship between justice and the current crises. Charlie Scheiner, who is just returning from Timor-Leste where he works for La™o Hamutuk (Timor-Leste Institute for Development Monitoring and Analysis), will discuss recent events and provide information on oil-related issues.

ETAN will hold Advocacy Days April 13-15 in Washington, DC, and interested people will be able to learn more about participating. For more information please contact <mailto:etanny@etan.org>etanny@etan.org or call (718) 596-7668.
