Part One – News Review and Investigative Reports

Rwanda bill. Jacob Rees Mogg on Peston about the Rwanda bill. BBC QT – Lawyer Hashi Mohammed on how Israel tried a Rwanda system and it didn’t work. Immigration a major election issue this year? Barrister praised for ‘brilliant’ takedown of Rwanda policy on Question Time A BARRISTER who came to the UK as a child refugee has been praised for their “brilliant and truthful” takedown of the Tory government’s Rwanda policy on Question Time. Hashi Mohamed, now a barrister at No5 Chambers in London, appeared on the BBC show as it was broadcast from Peterborough on Thursday night. Mohamed, the author of People Like Us: What It Takes to Make It in Modern Britain, raised work he had done with a refugee in Dresden, who had been through Israel’s own Rwanda deportation scheme. The barrister told the Question Time audience: “Two years ago, I travelled to Dresden, the German town, and I met an Eritrean man who had been deported from Israel to Rwanda. He’d been paid to go to Rwanda. Rwanda had a reciprocal arrangement with Israel to take refugees. “When he got there, the Rwandans said, ‘you don’t need to stay, there’s the door’. And he used the money that he was given to make his way back, that treacherous journey, and he made his way to Dresden, where he sought asylum again. “The Supreme Court in Israel struck down that law and when we got to our Supreme Court, there’s a passage by our learned judges where they said the Home Office hadn’t even assessed the Israel Rwanda policy before they decided to adopt it, so we know it’s not going to work. “It’s unviable, it’s expensive, and the only person it’s working for is the Rwandans. Mohamed went on to attack the Tory government, saying that instead of presenting “real ideas”: “They’re attacking our judges. They’re attacking our rule of law.

Illegal boat migrants economic migrants? Nigel Farage on Peston – Rwanda won’t work legally. Labour Party, Unions and Starmer. Socialised, collectivised, public transport. What happened when Israel sent its refugees to Rwanda – As the UK presses on with its plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, the BBC has heard evidence that, as recently as 2017, refugees despatched there by Israel were rapidly deported and are now in Europe. Bahabelom Mengesha, a 36-year-old Eritrean man, knows what it’s like to be sent to Rwanda by another country. But his stay there as an asylum seeker was brief. He had left post-war Eritrea in 2010 and moved to Israel to claim asylum. Four years later, his permit was revoked and he was given a choice – be sent home, go to a migrant detention facility, or take $3,500 and a one-way flight to Rwanda. It felt like no choice at all, he told the BBC, from Switzerland, where he has been living for the past seven years. “No sane person would voluntarily go to prison,” says Bahabelom of detention in Israel. “To go back to Eritrea, where imprisonment is part of the culture, this was [also] no option.” So he chose Rwanda. But Bahabelom soon found out he wasn’t welcome in the east African country. No sooner had he landed in its capital, Kigali, than he was told he must leave again for neighbouring Uganda – and all for a fee. It is not clear who was orchestrating his expulsion from Rwanda – and that of other migrants we have spoken to – but Bahabelom believes

Ken Livingstone in 1980s. Technical solutions to climate change? Port Talbot steel works shut. Tata Steel move to axe 3,000 jobs will turn Port Talbot into a ghost town, workers warn – Unions have accused the Tories of lavishing vast sums of cash on the site’s owners Tata Steel only for it to go ahead and scrap nearly 3,000 staff – despite a major drive to save the Devastated steelworkers last night warned axing so many jobs at Port Talbot will spark an economic nightmare that could turn the once thriving area into a ghost town. And unions accused the Tories of lavishing vast sums of cash on the site’s owners Tata Steel only for it to go ahead and scrap nearly 3,000 staff, despite a major drive to save the posts. No10 is funding part of the £1.25billion cost of building a less-polluting electric arc furnace at Port Talbot in South Wales. But the site’s two blast furnaces and coke ovens will shut, causing job losses. The Community union, Unite and the GMB said in a joint statement: “It’s unbelievable any government would give a company £500million to throw 3,000 workers on the scrapheap. It is an absolute disgrace that Tata Steel, and the Government, appear intent on pursuing the cheapest instead of the best plan for our industry, steelworkers and country.” Community general secretary Roy Rickhuss warned: “Decisions made now will reverberate for generations to come.” His fears were echoed by Rhydian Mizen, who worked at the Port Talbot site for 38 years. He said: “If no income is coming in, there will be nothing coming into the town, it will be a ghost town.” Another worker, Tony Taylor, 68, warned the knock-on will be “disastrous and devastating”. He added: “This is going to be a major blow to Port Talbot and the wider area. Where we’re going to go after this I don’t know.” One staff member said: “Myself, my wife, my mother and my father all work in the steelworks. My brother, uncles, cousin. So it’s my whole household income.”

James Tweedie’s Mum has trouble with her electric car – Driverless cars were the future but now the truth is out: they’re on the road to nowhere – For all the billions spent, the dream of these vehicles ruling the roads remains just that. It would be much smarter to focus on public transport Developing driverless cars has been AI’s greatest test. Today we can say it has failed miserably, despite the expenditure of tens of billions of dollars in attempts to produce a viable commercial vehicle. Moreover, the recent withdrawal from the market of a leading provider of robotaxis in the US, coupled with the introduction of strict legislation in the UK, suggests that the developers’ hopes of monetising the concept are even more remote than before. The very future of the idea hangs in the balance. The attempt to produce a driverless car started in the mid-00s with a challenge by a US defence research agency, offering a $1m prize for whoever could create one capable of making a very limited journey in the desert. This quickly turned into a race between various tech and car companies (OEMs, as they are now known – original equipment manufacturers) to produce what they thought would be the ultimate cash cow: a car that could operate in all conditions without a driver. Right from the start, the hype far outpaced the technological advances. In 2010, at the Shanghai Expo, General Motors had produced a video showing a driverless car taking a pregnant woman to hospital at breakneck speed and, as the commentary assured the viewers, safely. It was precisely the promise of greater safety, cutting the terrible worldwide annual roads death toll of 1.25m, that the sponsors of driverless vehicles dangled in front of the public. And that is now proving their undoing. First to go was Uber after an accident in which one of its self-driving cars killed Elaine Herzberg in Phoenix, Arizona. The car was in autonomous mode, and its “operator” was accused of watching a TV show, meaning they did not notice when the car hit Herzberg, who had confused its computers by stepping on to the highway pushing a bike carrying bags on its handlebars. Fatally, the computer could not interpret this confusing array of objects….

Chris Skidmore, Bristol Labour MP, stands down triggering a by election. Will Greens take Bristol central? DAVOS WEF meeting. Full list of General Election seat forecast for Bristol – Tories headed for colossal losses A newly-created constituency in Bristol is expected to be very hotly-contested between Labour and the Greens he Conservatives are being forecast to lose three out of five MPs they currently have in the Bristol area in the next General Election, according to a new model. YouGov found that Labour would win a large majority were the election to be held now, with Keir Starmer sitting on a 120-seat majority. In the Bristol region, the model shows that Labour would increase the number of MPs they have to seven. All of the Bristol constituencies- including newly-created Bristol Central and Bristol North East constituencies – are being forecast to go to Labour. The newly-created Bristol Central constituency is expected to be hotly-contested, with the Green Party hoping to get its co-leader Carla Denyer elected. However, The YouGov results shows a narrow win in the seat by Labour (42 per cent) to the Greens (38 per cent). In the wider region, the Conservatives are expected to lose Filton and Bradley Stoke – which would be going to Labour – and Thornbury and Yate, which would go to the Lib Dems. In another hotly-contested election, Labour is expected to gain Weston-super-Mare from the Conservatives.

Ron Mandel, former Internal Relations lecturer in UK, joins Tony and Martin. How Ron became a teacher and why he came to UK. Davos WEF – list of some attendees. Fujitsu is a major sponsor of Davos. Davos a mixture of business and government – healthy? Bilderberg secret. The ‘dirty dozen’ of Davos – Autocrats, blowhards and bores: The 12 bad boys of the World Economic Forum shindig in the Swiss Alps. The dirty dozen of Davos – It’s that time of year again: Leaders, business titans, philanthropists and celebs descend on the Swiss ski town of Davos to discuss the fate of the world and do deals/shots with the global elite at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. This year’s theme: “Rebuilding trust.” Prescient, given the dumpster fire the world seems to be turning into lately, both literally (climate change) and figuratively (where to even begin?). As always, the Davos great and good will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s absolute top-drawer dirtbags. While there’s been a distinct dearth of Russian oligarchs in attendance at the WEF since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Donald Trump will be tied up with the Iowa caucus, there are still plenty of would-be autocrats, dictators, thugs, extortionists, misery merchants, spoilers and political pariahs on the Davos guest list.

US Presidential election campaign. Farage on Peston, as part of Reform UK, on Trump. Role of money in US political system. Trump’s prosecutions. Will Trump win election? Nigel Farage says American democracy in better shape than Britain’s Brexit leader says Trump is ‘going to win this caucus this evening by quite a big margin’ Nigel Farage said he believes that American democracy is in better shape than Britain’s, even as polls show many Americans expect violence to follow the 2024 election, in a possible repeat of the January 6, 2021 insurrection after the 2020 election. Appearing on the British right-leaning TV news channel GB News from Iowa, the Brexit campaigner said the Trump team are “pretty bullish. They really are. If the polls are right … he’s going to win this caucus this evening by quite a big margin”. “To be here and to see the enthusiasm for the democratic process in America – it’s such a contrast to our country. It really is remarkable that all these people will turn out at seven o’clock tonight to vote and some will vote for Trump or some a vote for Haley or Ramaswamy. But it really is an exciting thing to be part of,” he added. Another side to the enthusiasm Mr Farage, 59, is speaking about is that the strong feelings in US politics at times turn into real-world violence, as seen three years ago during the Capitol riot. Just 51 per cent of Americans expect the time after the next election to be peaceful, while the remaining 49 per cent think there will be violence yet again, according to a CBS/YouGov poll from earlier this month. “This is seldom polled in Britain,” Sunder Katwala of the think tank British Future noted on X. As many as 39 per cent of Americans don’t believe that President Joe Biden is the legitimate leader of the country, according to the CBS/YouGov poll. When the caucuses take place on Monday night, there will be no polling places. Party activists will instead host meetings in whatever building is available in their precinct – churches, gyms, and people’s living rooms will be used. A representative from each campaign will get a moment to make their case and voters then write down their preferred candidate on a blank piece of paper.

UK elections – much of a choice with WEF Davos in the background sponsoring all political parties?

Yemen’s Houthis attacking ships in Red Sea, and UK/US attacking them. C4 Gary Gibbon – Yemen attacks discussed in Parliament on Monday. Yemen’s Houthis Threaten ‘High Price’ for US, UK Massive Strikes – The US and Britain have already launched 23 strikes on targets in four Yemeni provinces, local authorities told Sputnik. President Biden confirmed US and allied military strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, called them a response to a threat to freedom of navigation. The United States and the United Kingdom will pay a “high price” for their airstrikes, Hussein al-Ezzi, the deputy foreign minister of the movement, said Friday. “Our country has been subjected to a massive aggressive attack carried out by American and British ships, submarines and warplanes. Undoubtedly, America and Britain will have to prepare to pay a high price and bear all the terrible consequences of this blatant aggression,” al-Ezzi said on X. US said that as of 3:20am, they and UK have stopped carrying out strikes in Yemen. However, the US might resume them if threats and attacks from the Houthis continue. Later a US defense official told Sputnik that there has been no attack against the American Embassy in Iraq and no reports of US warships struck following US strikes, despite some media reported Houthis were allegedly launching retaliation strike missiles at US ships right at that time. Pentagon confirmed the strikes on Yemen, stating the targets were the drone production centres and weapons depots. Strikes on the positions of the Houthis were carried out from aircraft, ships and submarines, writes Reuters, citing a US official. “The strikes were carried out on targets in Hodeidah,” the local authority source said. “Four airstrikes were carried out on Yemen’s capital Sanaa,” said an agency interlocutor from authorities in Saada province. The city of Taiz in central Yemen was also bombed by the United States and the United Kingdom overnight, a government source in the Yemeni governorate of Taiz told Sputnik. “Three explosions occurred as a result of bombing positions of the Ansar Allah group in the area of [the village of] Al Hawban in the Yemeni city of Taiz,” the source said. Earlier, Al Arabiya TV channel quoted sources as saying that the US and Britain launched an operation on Friday night against the facilities of the ruling Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement in northern Yemen. The sources noted that the strike particularly targeted the vicinity of the port of Hodeidah. They also added that five airstrikes hit Houthi targets east of Hodeidah.

Cameron at DAVOS – justifying UK/US attacks on Yemen – peace in Gaza. Iran proxies? What about US/UK proxies? Imperialism. C4 Defence Minister, James Cartridge asked if UK/US will retaliate again after more Houthi ship attacks. Genocide in Gaza and history of situation there misunderstood. ICJ South Africa – Genocide in Gaza. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron says the country is ready to step up stop attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels. He also says Iran’s behavior has been unacceptable. He speaks on “Bloomberg Surveillance ” at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Dr. Judith Brown on Yemen ship attacks – on Yemen war ending as Ukraine war begins. Pakistan Iran strikes. American ‘Losers’ Can’t Pass Through Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Yemen’s Houthis Say The Yemeni militia struck a US-owned ship in the Gulf of Aden on Monday, a day after firing an anti-ship missile at a US destroyer in the Red Sea. The attacks followed Friday and Saturday’s US-UK strikes against Houthi targets as part of the Washington-led response to the militia’s campaign of hijackings and attacks against Israeli-linked ships. US and British forces are no longer allowed to pass through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait chokepoint linking the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, Yemen’s Houthis have announced. “The US and UK forces can no longer pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait,” Houthi Political Bureau member Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said, his comments picked up by Iranian media on Tuesday. “The Axis of Resistance has regained control over the region. The Americans will regret their acts of aggression against Yemen and they will be a loser,” Bukhaiti added, referencing the January 12-13 US-UK cruise missile and air strikes inside Yemen, which involved over 100 munitions “of various types” fired against over 60 targets, killing at least six militiamen. Bukhaiti assured that the Houthis retain the capability to confront Washington and to stop American and Israeli ships from passing through the Red Sea, and warned that the militia is growing its missile capabilities and will ‘bring new surprises soon’. He did not elaborate.

Palestine Action’s statement on London Stock Exchange arrests – Five activists were released on bail after they were arrested for alleged ‘conspiracy to commit public nuisance’ at the London Stock Exchange (L.S.E). One was charged and remanded to Wirral Magistrates Court, where he will apply for bail. The L.S.E has raised over over £4.73billion in the sale of bonds for the apartheid state of Israel in the past six years. The exchange describes itself as “a key partner to Israeli businesses, by enabling them to raise capital internationally” and trades shares in weapons manufacturers arming Israel’s regime, including BAE Systems, Babcock, and QinetiQ. In a meeting on the 8th February 2022 between the UK Secretary of State and Israeli investors, which included representatives from Israeli weapons companies Elbit Systems and Rafael, it was noted that “The London Stock Exchange has a strong and important relationship with Israel”. This relationship involves the L.S.E holding capital market conferences in Israel and hosting Israeli business on the exchange which have a combined market capital of $14.7billion. The arrests came after an undercover journalist from the Daily Express infiltrated the group and reported the activists to the police. The journalist, Max Parry, joined Palestine Action under the false identity of ‘Ollie Maxwell’, an environmental campaigner who worked in a cafe in Laughton. Amongst his fabricated backstory on how he became involved in the Palestine liberation movement and other false assertions, he falsified online accounts and messages from his ‘manager’ in an attempt to quash suspicion. As an active direct action movement which has consistently taken direct action to end British complicity with the colonisation of Palestine, we’ve caused significant disruption to Israel’s weapons trade. As a result, the state and other bad faith actors have taken several measures to try and crack down on our growing movement over the past 3 years. Now more than ever, as Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people has seen over 25,000 killed, more than 60,000 injured and the majority of the Gaza population displaced, Palestine Action will not back down. We will continue to grow, evolve and remain steadfast in our direct action campaign against the Israeli weapons trade and those who facilitate it.

World Economic Forum calling for Direct Action by Citizens – presumably referring to Extinction Rebellion but equally might apply to Palestine Action taking out Elbit Systems offices and factories across the UK: ‘Be an actionist’: An environmental trailblazer’s inspiring message to climate activists from Davos – David Saddington shares his unique perspective on climate action and youth access at the World Economic Forum. From being a kid trapped in a storm to walking the halls of power, 31-year-old David Saddington’s life has been shaped by the course of climate change and climate action in the UK. As a 13-year-old, David recalls being stuck in some of the worst flash floods to ever hit his home in North Yorkshire. Fear turned to anger, as he discovered that climate change was driving the torrential rain and devastation he witnessed – and the crisis was way down the agenda of adults. David Saddington shares his unique perspective on climate action and youth access at the World Economic Forum. “It was already clear in 2005 that this issue of ‘climate change’ was going to affect my life and generations to come,” he tells Euronews Green from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. “So I took it upon myself to make a noise in my school.” But his fledgling climate activism took an unusual turn when he was invited to Downing Street at 14, to discuss the issue with then Prime Minister Tony Blair. He asked the PM to put genocide on the national curriculum – a measure adopted in 2007.

Palestine Action tries to target stock exchange in protest over Gaza. Elbit 7 trial in Bristol. Nick Georges, from Palestine Action, on how Police hassled his sister for pinning a note to MPs door, and atrocious situation in Gaza. Man charged over ‘plot by pro-Palestine protesters to disrupt London Stock Exchange’ A man has been charged with conspiracy to cause public nuisance after an alleged plot to disrupt the London Stock Exchange and cause “huge economic damage” was revealed. Five other people – three women and two men – were also arrested in connection with the plot and have been bailed pending further inquiries, Scotland Yard said. The Met began an investigation after being passed information on Friday by the Daily Express. Activists from the group Palestine Action were allegedly plotting to “target” the London Stock Exchange on the morning of January 15, causing damage and “locking on” to stop the building opening for trading, the force said. The Express reported that the plot would kick-start a planned “week of chaos”, while the Met said there was a “suggestion that this was one part of a planned week of action”. The newspaper said the group hoped to cause “huge economic damage” by climbing on top of two revolving doors at the front of the building, armed with red paint-filled fire extinguishers, before locking their necks to the glass entrance using bike locks. Other activists would lock themselves together in front of the main and back entrances, while fake bank notes, painted red to represent blood, were fired from “money guns”. The allegations come after a two-month investigation during which a reporter posed as a member of the group, the Express reported. It claimed to have been in touch with the group’s ringleader, who said on the encrypted messaging app Signal that Monday’s plot was part of a week of action against British institutions “complicit in Israeli apartheid”. A 29-year-old woman was arrested in Albert Road, Brent, north London, and a 23-year-old man was held in Voss Street, Tower Hamlets, east London. Two women, aged 28 and 26, were arrested in Liverpool, and a 27-year-old man was arrested in Brighton, East Sussex. Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Palestine Action said the “campaign to end Israel’s weapons trade remains undeterred”. Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Sian Thomas said: “We believe this group was ready to carry out a disruptive and damaging stunt which could have had serious implications had it been carried out successfully. “I’m grateful to the Express for their willingness to provide the information gleaned from their own investigation. It was instrumental in helping us intervene successfully. “Having only been provided with the material on Friday afternoon we had limited time to act. “Mindful of the suggestion that this was one part of a planned week of action, we are in contact with the City of London Police as well as other forces across the UK to ensure that appropriate resources are in place to deal with any disruption in the coming days.” Palestine Action previously told the PA news agency: “The London Stock Exchange raise billions of pounds for apartheid Israel and trade shares in weapons manufacturers which arm Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people. “Whilst Britain remains complicit in the brutal colonisation of Palestine, our direct action campaign will not be deterred.” Several members of the group, which was formed in July 2020 and claims to want to shut down the arms trade with Israel, have been the subject of legal action in recent months. In December, eight activists were acquitted of a total of 12 charges, including criminal damage, burglary and encouraging criminal damage, the group said, while its founder, Richard Barnard, was convicted of criminal damage for his involvement in action against an Elbit Ferranti factory in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Seven activists currently face charges of burglary and criminal damage in a trial at Bristol Crown Court after allegedly entering Elbit’s headquarters in the city.

Israeli arms firm factories in the UK Elbit covered in red paint by Palestine Action. Palestine Action smash Elbit’s cargo contractors: no transport for genocide! – Overnight actions by Palestine Action have targeted the logistics companies servicing the operations of Israel’s arms trade in Britain, disrupting their operations and exposing their role in arming the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. Palestine Action targeted logistics companies belonging to Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) and Palletline, as part of a widespread direct action campaign against Israel’s biggest weapons manufacturer, Elbit Systems, and the companies which facilitate their weapons manufacturing in Britain and their arms exports to Israel. K+N’s Milton Keynes branch and their subsidiary in London, Nacaro cargo insurance, were targeted overnight. At the company’s Milton Keynes industrial site, which specialises in road transportation, activists sprayed the entire front of the building in blood-red paint and shattered windows. In London, others took similar action against Nacora, leaving the office drenched in paint.
