On the word of the Canadian Security Intelligence, the Solicitor-General and Immgiration Minister can have any refugee or permanent resident in Canada declared a security threat, arrested, held in jail without bail, and brought before a court in which the accused never learns the evidence against them. On that case alone, an immigrant or refugee can be deported back to their country of origin.
Mohamed Harkat is one held in Canada on such a "security certificate". Arrested on December 10, 2002, he faces no criminal charges but will instead face a secret hearing beginning April 28, 2003.
Mohamed Harkat denies all the allegations against him. His wife, Sophie Harkat, believes him and has seen no evidence to cause her to doubt. She has been working for his release since December and spoke in Toronto and southwestern Ontario in March, when CKLN got a chance to speak with her and hear her part of the story.
On Saturday, April 26, Direct Action Casework Ottawa (DACO) is sponsoring a vigil in support of the family in Ottawa, beginning 7:30pm at the Human Rights Monument in Ottawa.
