Dear Radio Friend, This week's show features stories from NHK World Radio Japan, Radio Havana Cuba, Sputnik Radio, and Radio Deutsche-Welle. http://www.outfarpress.com/swr18072o.mp3
From JAPAN- In Japan record heat waves are following record rainfall and flooding. Japan and the EU have signed a comprehensive free trade deal, in stark contrast to American protectionism. China met with EU leaders in Beijing and they agreed on the need for the WTO and against unilateral tariffs. Meetings are being held at the UN on Global Sustainable Development- Ecuador reported a drop in poverty and that renewable energy now accounts for 65% of its total energy consumption. At the UN meeting, a global goals declaration was adopted, with only the US and Israel voting against it.
From CUBA- Lula da Silva sent a message to the Sao Paolo forum saying he will not be silenced in speaking out against US actions against Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Members at the 24th forum denounced the political persecution that Latin American left-wing leaders are being subjected to by imperialist right-wing forces. The largest newspaper in Finland used 300 billboards to mock Trump during his visit to meet with Putin. Israel has further closed gas and fuels from getting into the Gaza Strip, the fishing zone has been cut in half, and bombed the southern half of the strip last weekend.
From RUSSIA- Afshin Rattansi interviewed Irish independent Senator David Norris. They discussed the movement in Ireland to boycott Israeli products produced on settlements on illegally occupied Palestinian land. Norris points out the lack of action by the EU on human rights violations by Israel, the entanglement of British weapon sales without conscience, and the global sales of weapons by Israel after testing them on Palestinians.
From GERMANY- I had hoped to get EU leaders remarks on the Trump/Putin press conference this week, but they were rather evasive. Here are remarks from a foreign policy expert of the German Council on Foreign Relations. Then a report on Trump's claim that he made a linguistic error during the press conference. Spain has dropped its request to have Germany extradite Catalan independence leader Carles Puigdemont.
