Friendly, efficient and quick off the mark with sandwiches and cups of tea to comfort those about to leap off the roof of Radio West, Sonia, the stations secretary played by Liz Crowther, epitomised the human face of Don Satchleys fictional radio station, the first port of call for any visitor. Appearing in every episode of Shoestring which was pulling in 20 million viewers an episode, Sonias role varied from deskbound scenes to larger parts, as in "Mocking Bird" and "Listen to Me" (those sandwiches and tea again). Even in short appearances within an episode, Sonia shone: on screen for a few seconds, Liz Crowther would add depth to a potentially unremarkable scene - as subtle as a wry face pulled in the background at a typing error.

Alternatives to Cuts - The Great Bristol Debate
HOW CAN WE AVOID CUTTING COUNCIL SERVICES AND FIGHT TORY AUSTERITY?
Since the huge anti-austerity march in Bristol last September which Bristol’s Labour mayor, Marvin Rees, took part in, various groups in Bristol have been campaigning for the council to find alternatives to cutting our vital public services and to continue the fight against Tory austerity in local government.
Campaigners have successfully defeated the proposed cuts to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, postponed plans to close 17 libraries, saved 16 of 40 threatened lollipop people and seen the council drop plans to completely de-fund our parks. The council have even passed a Labour motion against austerity. However many other services are still at risk, this year and in the years to come, if Theresa May’s plans are not defeated.
Join us on Wednesday 24th January for an open debate about what we can do instead of cutting public toilets, libraries, parks, services for the disabled, arts funding and many other threatened services.
Speakers: Tom Baldwin – Bristol Anti-Cuts Alliance; Esther Giles – Bristol Momentum; Bristol Green Party (speaker tbc); Unite the Union Bristol Retired Members Branch (invited); Bristol People’s Assembly (invited); Marvin Rees – mayor of Bristol (invited).
