EarthCraft Virginia, one of the longest-running green construction organizations (est. 1999) in the country, purposes to 'change the way that [Virginia] builds buildings.' Using energy modeling simulations, experienced building scientists, and sustainable construction plans, the builders who learn from EarthCraft’s programs seek to conserve environmental resources, engineer for market advantage on their homes, and create a high-performing and extremely sustainable residence. EarthCraft offers single-family programs (either gut renovation or complete builds), a multi-family program, a light commercial program, and are planning a community program for the near-future. Working from the principles of 'Environment, Equality, and Economics,' and seeking to fill the residential constructional and instructional niche, EarthCraft is thriving and leading a green-building revolution. They have certified 1700 homes in the last 6 years; they have collaborated with the Housing Development Authority and Habitat for Humanity, becoming a resource for green building practice and standards; and their modifications often result in 30% more energy efficiency than the current building code requires.
