The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted Thursday to extend the operating license for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts for another 20 years, despite opposition from local residents, the state Attorney General, the Governor, and town, state and Congressional representatives over ongoing safety and environmental concerns at the 40-year old plant. The sole dissenting vote belonged to outgoing NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko, who offered his resignation this week. The decision comes amid a host of regional and national challenges to relicensing bids at aging nuclear power plants throughout the country.
