Over the weekend you might have heard of the Israel defense forces attack on an unarmed ship bringing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip which is currently suffering from an Israeli enforced blockade of food and medical supplies. Benjamin Netanyahu rather cynically describes the reasons for such a brutal blockade: "To make the people of Gaza go on a diet" Although shocking, this is hardly the first time that Israel has attacked a foreign vessel in international waters with significant causalities. In fact, one of the few times the United States did not retaliate in kind for such an attack came from Israel. On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War Israeli Air Force jet fighter planes and motor torpedo boats, attacked the United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty. According to a National Security Agency report, the combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and a civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula.
