I felt compelled to challenge Rory publicly when he attempted to have an impoverished family living adjacent to our courtyard evicted. In 2007, needing additional space to house his growing staff, Rory sought to obtain a parcel of land that had been the home for about 30 years to the family of Haji Karbalai, his wife and their ten children, including infant twins. To engineer their removal, Rory offered Mahboba Noor $500 per month in rent for the Karbalai land. She said she could not rent the land to him because her late husband had a âsacred trustâ with the Karbalai family that they could live on the property for life in exchange for looking after the Qala-e-Noborja. Soon after, Roryâs guards started denying entry to Haji Karbalai when he tried to enter the Qala-e Noborja gardens to care for them. Meanwhile, over successive months, Rory increased the amount he offered to Mahboba Noor for the Karbalai land. By August 2007, shortly after Rory learned that his Turquoise Mountain Foundation would receive a grant of $3 million from the Canadian government, Rory increased his offer to $1700 a month. Mahboba Noor, a widow with four children, ultimately decided that her late husbandâs âsacred trustâ with the Karbalai family was not so sacred after all. She agreed to rent Rory the Karbalai land â although she does not own it. Even after Rory was informed that she is not the owner and was encouraged to demand that she produce documents proving she is, he persisted in his efforts to have her evict the Karbalai family. (The Karbalai land is actually owned by an Afghan woman now living as a refugee in Toronto, the sister of Mrs. Noorâs late husband.) In his effort to remove the family from their home, which they had built themselves, Rory made no provisions for their well-being. Indeed, one of his staff ordered the family to leave within three days, or their house would be bulldozed on top of them.
